Reading this part of Metaphors We Live By has helped me realize that language is not only a tool for communication, but also a mirror of culture and values. The metaphorical concept “UP is GOOD” appears simple, but it deeply influences how we describe success, morality, and hope for the future. As an English learner from a different cultural background, I find this both fascinating and enlightening. In Chinese, we also say “步步高升” (step by step, rise higher), which shows a similar metaphorical structure. This connection inspires me to look more closely at how metaphors shape thinking in both English and my native language. It also helps me understand that learning a language is not just about grammar and vocabulary, but about understanding how people see the world. This book encourages me to think metaphorically and culturally while learning English, making my learning process more meaningful and insightful. |
