This post is so well put together! Let me add a few details~
About the mask: Tutankhamun’s golden mask is 54cm tall and around 10kg. The hieroglyphs on its shoulders are protective spells from Chapter 151 of the Book of the Dead, to guide the pharaoh through the underworld judgment and be reborn. Fun fact: Many scholars think it was originally made for the female pharaoh Neferneferuaten (also Smenkhkare) — they later changed the cartouches for Tutankhamun, and the pierced ear holes are one of the key proofs!
About the pharaoh himself: His original name was Tutankhaten. After taking the throne, he changed it to Tutankhamun, gave up Aten worship, moved the religious center back to Thebes, and restored the old theocratic order. He died unexpectedly at 18 — his tomb wasn’t finished, so he was buried in a hurry. But that actually saved it from tomb raiders, making it the only intact pharaoh’s tomb in ancient Egypt!
About the tomb and sarcophagi: There are three nested coffins, and the innermost one is solid gold. When it was first unearthed, it was covered in thick black resin. Ancient Egyptians believed gods had silver bones, golden skin, and lapis lazuli hair — so they made the coffin with gold and inlaid semi-precious stones, symbolizing the pharaoh becoming a god after death. The flail and crook on the coffin are his royal symbols.
Carter spent a whole 10 years sorting out all the artifacts in the tomb. This discovery totally sparked a worldwide Egyptomania. Even now, the stories of faith, power and life-death behind the mask are still super fascinating! |
