Reading Notes
Reader: Qyi
Reading Time: two weeks
Reading Pages: the whole book
Among them, "One Smart Cookie" and "Beautiful and Cruel" have left a deep impression on me. Here are my reading notes.
Brief introduction to the stories
"One Smart Cookie" tells the story of the narrator's mother. She is a talented and intelligent woman who can speak two languages, sing opera, and repair a TV. However, she is not able to navigate the subway to the city center. She used to paint but now creates art with needle and thread. She has big dreams but is held back by her circumstances. She encourages her daughter to study hard and not repeat her mistakes.
"Beautiful and Cruel" focuses on the narrator's desire to break free from traditional gender roles. She refuses to be like other girls who wait for a husband. She admires the strong and independent women in movies who are both beautiful and cruel. She starts her own silent rebellion against these gender expectations.
Themes and analysis
Both stories explore the theme of women's struggle for independence and self-determination in a society that often limits their opportunities. In "One Smart Cookie," the mother's talents and dreams are restricted by her lack of education and the expectations of her role as a wife and mother. Her story highlights the sacrifices and regrets that many women face when they are unable to pursue their own goals.
In "Beautiful and Cruel," the narrator is determined not to follow the same path as other women. She wants to be in control of her own life and not be defined by her appearance or by the men in her life. This story emphasizes the importance of self-respect and the courage to challenge societal norms.
Personal feelings and thoughts
These stories have made me reflect on the challenges that women face in pursuing their dreams and asserting their independence. The mother in "One Smart Cookie" represents the lost potential of many women who are held back by circumstances. Her encouragement to her daughter shows the hope for a new generation of women who can break free from these limitations.
The narrator in "Beautiful and Cruel" inspires me with her determination and strength. She is not afraid to be different and to stand up for herself. Her rebellion is a powerful statement about the importance of women's autonomy and the need to challenge the expectations placed on them.
Both stories remind me of the ongoing struggle for gender equality and the importance of supporting women in their pursuit of education and independence. They have made me more aware of the barriers that still exist and the need to continue fighting for a more equal society.
These two stories from The House on Mango Street have provided me with valuable insights into the experiences of women and the challenges they face in their pursuit of self-determination. They have inspired me to think more deeply about gender roles and the importance of supporting women's independence.
