These chapters were about sentence structure, and they helped me understand why some of my English writing doesn’t sound “right,” even when the grammar is okay.
Chapter 9 explained that where we place a phrase or clause affects the meaning of a sentence. In Chinese, we can move things around more freely. But in English, changing the order can cause confusion or even change the subject. For example, placing a time phrase in the wrong position might make it seem like the wrong part of the sentence is being described.
Chapter 10 focused on dangling modifiers. This chapter was both funny and useful. I laughed at the sentence “Driving down the road, the tree caught my attention,” because I imagined the tree driving. But it made a serious point—modifiers must clearly relate to the subject. In my past essays, I’ve probably made this mistake without knowing. From now on, I’ll double-check my sentence openings to make sure the subject is doing the action.
These chapters also reminded me that English is very strict about logical order. The reader expects everything to be connected clearly and smoothly. That’s something I still need to work on.
