Chapter 8: Pronouns and Antecedents

1.Four principles:
Clarity: The antecedent must be clear (e.g., avoid use "which" to reference a vague clause).
Location proximity: The pronoun should be close to the antecedent (e.g., adjust "After years of effort, Gao said..." to "Gao said that after years of effort...").
Grammatical agreement: The pronoun must agree with the antecedent in person, gender and number (e.g., "they" matches a plural noun).
2. 避免歧义:例句“To enforce... against bureaucracy, which is important”中的“which”可能误指“bureaucracy”,需补充“a struggle”以明确。
Reflections:
Chinese often omits logical conjunctions, while English requires a rigorous relationship between pronouns and antecedents. For example, if "经过多年努力,问题解决了" is translated directly into English, the logical connection between "effort" and "solution" should be clear. Pronouns should be checked repeatedly for ambiguity during proofreading.
