Kumbh Mela of India, also known as the "Sacred Water Bathing Festival," is the largest religious gathering in the world and one of the most awe-inspiring congregations of human culture on Earth. It is a vital part of India's Intangible Cultural Heritage, inscribed on the UNESCO Representative List.

Mythological Origins
According to Puranic legends, the hot-tempered sage Durvasa once gave Lord Indra, the king of the gods, a garland of eternal flowers. Indra casually passed the garland to his divine elephant, Airavata, who, unaware of its significance, crushed the petals. Enraged, Sage Durvasa cursed Indra to lose all his wealth and power. Subsequently, the demons attacked, and the gods grew weak. Lord Vishnu advised Indra that he needed to drink the nectar of immortality (Amrit), which lay hidden beneath the depths of the mighty ocean inside a pitcher called a "Kumbh." The gods lured the demons into helping them churn the ocean to obtain the Kumbh. When the Amrit Kumbh emerged, Lord Vishnu handed it to his mount, the celestial bird Garuda, to take it to the heavens. On the way, the demons intercepted Garuda four times, and during the struggle, drops of the nectar spilled at four places — present-day Prayagraj (Allahabad), Haridwar, Ujjain, and Nashik. Garuda's flight lasted 12 days in celestial time, corresponding to 12 human years. Therefore, the Kumbh Mela is celebrated at the same location every 12 years, under the identical astrological combination. Thus, for the local people, it is a rare and momentous occasion.

Festival Highlights
Sacred River Bathing:
This is the central ritual of the Kumbh Mela. Devotees believe that bathing in sacred rivers such as the Ganges (Ganga) cleanses them of a lifetime of sins and grants spiritual purification and rebirth. On specific "bathing dates" (Shahi Snan), tens of millions, sometimes even over a hundred million people, enter the waters simultaneously, creating a spectacle of overwhelming magnitude.
Sadhus and Ascetics:
During the festival, ascetics and holy men (Sadhus), who ordinarily live in seclusion, emerge. With bodies smeared in ash, matted dreadlocks, and carrying tridents (Trishul) and other ritual implements, they form a unique and enigmatic sight at the gathering.
The City of Faith:
Thousands upon thousands of tents spring up along the riverbanks, forming a temporary "City of Faith." This sprawling encampment is filled with gurus expounding scriptures, vendors selling handicrafts, musicians performing traditional melodies, and charitable kitchens (Langars or Bhandaras) offering free vegetarian meals, all steeped in an intense devotional atmosphere.

Time and Location
The dates of the Kumbh Mela are not fixed according to the Gregorian calendar. Instead, they are determined by astrologers based on the specific zodiacal positions of the planet Jupiter (Brihaspati), the Sun (Surya), and the Moon (Chandra).
Rotational Cycle:
The four sacred cities host the festival in a rotating cycle every three years. In addition to the main Kumbh Mela, there is the smaller-scale "Ardh Kumbh Mela" (Half Kumbh), held every six years in Prayagraj and Haridwar, and the extremely rare "Magh Mela" (Mini Kumbh), which occurs every thirty-six years.
Maha Kumbh Mela (Century Kumbh):
Every 144 years, when a rare alignment of the Sun, Moon, and Jupiter occurs once again, an exceptionally grand "Maha Kumbh Mela" (Great Kumbh Mela) is held, carrying the utmost sanctity. The most recent Maha Kumbh took place in 2001.
