Thanks for this clear introduction to the term Upanishad! The etymology (upa-ni-sad, "sitting down near") really captures the intimate teacher-student tradition central to these texts. It's also worth noting that while around 200 texts exist, the 13 principal Upanishads remain the core focus of philosophical study. Nice post!

Thank you so much for gathering those materials on the Upanishads. Your effort saved me hours of searching. The idea that true knowledge comes from self-inquiry, not just rituals, really struck me. I also appreciated the dialogues on meditation and detachment. Your collection made these ancient ideas surprisingly accessible—thank you!

Thank you. Many concepts in the Upanishads, the ancient sacred scriptures of India, exerted a profound influence on later Indian religious and philosophical schools. The Buddhist notion of nirvana took shape by absorbing, drawing upon, and transforming the idea of liberation (moksha) found in the Upanishads.

Thanks for sharing! In what ways can the Upanishads be read as both religious scripture and philosophical literature today?

The Upanishads are profound ancient Indian Vedic philosophical texts. Derived from Sanskrit meaning "sitting down near", they refer to disciples learning secret wisdom from teachers. Compiled mainly from 800 BCE to 200 BCE, about 13 core texts are widely recognized, recording precious insights of ancient Indian sages.
