Shiva and Parvati

Shiva and Parvati are the most revered divine couple in Hindu mythology. Their inseparable marriage embodies core Hindu cosmology, showing harmony between transcendence and mortal life, spirit and dynamic power. Their tales have shaped religion, art and philosophy for millennia.

Shiva

Shiva governs destruction, transformation and meditation, one of the Trimurti. Brahma creates, Vishnu sustains, and Shiva eliminates corruption and ignorance to make room for rebirth.
He dwells on sacred Mount Kailash, with white bull Nandi as his mount. His symbols are the all-seeing third eye, trident and matted locks holding the Ganges. Often lost in meditation, he cares for all creatures. As Nataraja, his cosmic dance controls the universe’s cycle of birth and collapse.

Parvati

Parvati, Goddess Shakti, is Shiva’s eternal consort and the source of feminine cosmic energy. She stands for love, compassion, fertility, protection and family harmony, bringing vitality to Shiva’s quiet consciousness.
Daughter of the Himalayan king, she appears gentle, loyal and nurturing. When evil rises, she transforms into warrior forms: lion-riding Durga who defeats demons, and fearless Kali who delivers cosmic justice. Her dual nature shows kindness holds immense divine strength.

Their Eternal Love Story

Shiva withdrew into centuries of lonely meditation after his first wife Sati passed away, throwing the universe off balance. Parvati descended to earth and endured years of harsh mountain penance to prove her devotion. Moved by her faith, Shiva married her.
They have two sons: elephant-headed Ganesha, god of wisdom and fortune, and Kartikeya, the valiant god of war.

Core Symbolism

Shiva symbolizes unchanging transcendental consciousness, while Parvati represents flowing creative energy. Neither can exist alone. Stillness and action, masculinity and femininity, solitude and family complement each other to sustain the cosmos.
Their union stands for universal balance and faithful marriage. They teach divinity lies in both meditation and worldly love and duty. Devotees worship them for marital bliss, family prosperity, inner peace and spiritual freedom.
