A Real Meaning of Peace
There once was a king who offered a prize to the artist who would paint the best picture of peace. Many artists tried. The king looked at all the pictures. But there were only two he really liked, and he had to choose between them. One picture was of a calm lake. The lake was a perfect mirror for peaceful towering mountains all around it. Overhead was a blue sky with fluffy white clouds. All who saw this picture thought that it was a perfect picture of peace.

The other picture had mountains, too. But these were rugged and bare. Above was an angry sky, from which rain fell and in which lightning played. Down the side of the mountain tumbled a foaming waterfall. This did not look peaceful at all.

But when the king looked closely, he saw behind the waterfall a tiny bush growing in a crack in the rock. In the bush a mother bird had built her nest. There, in the midst of the rush of angry water, sat the mother bird on her nest — in perfect peace.

Which picture do you think won the prize? The king chose the second picture. Do you know why?

“Because,” explained the king, “peace does not mean to be in a place where there is no noise, trouble, or hard work.. Peace means to be in the midst of all those things and still be calm in your heart. That is the real meaning of peace.”


宁静的真谛
有一天，国王决定颁发一个奖给对宁静诠释最好的画家。很多画家都送上自己觉得最满意的作品参加比赛。国王翻阅了所有的画作。真正令他满意的只有两幅，他要从中选择一个更好的。
其中一幅画中画的是一个平静的湖。蓝蓝的天空挂着朵朵绒球似的白云，湖面如镜，清晰地倒映着四周高耸的山峰。所有看到这幅画的人都会觉得这是诠释宁静的完美之作。
而另一幅画迥然不同。画画中有山，但却是裸露的崎岖不平的山，一道充满泡沫的瀑布翻滚而下。天空一点也不平静，电闪雷鸣，风雨交加。但是当国王走近看的时候，他发现瀑布后面隐约有块岩石，岩石上面有一个很小的灌木丛。在小灌木丛中，一只母鸟在搭建自己的安乐窝。激流中的绝佳之地啊！
如果是你，你会选择哪一幅画？国王选择了第二幅！为什么呢？
“因为……”这个国王给出了原因，“宁静并不是一味的安静，没有烦恼也没烦劳。宁静是一种心境，是在繁杂之中的一份平静心情。这才是宁静的真谛！！

looked closely_____ closely here means "done in a careful and thorough way"

岩石上面有一个很小的灌木丛_____this is not faithful to the original "a tiny bush growing in a crack in the rock.". What you use are general words, but the original are specific words. So it's better to translate into "岩石缝里长着一小簇灌木"

In the bush a mother bird had built her nest. There, in the midst of the rush of angry water, sat the mother bird on her nest — in perfect peace.
—————————注意这里用的是过去完成时，所以不能译成“在搭建自己的安乐窝”。in perfect peace译成“激流中的绝佳之地”也欠妥，因为它在原文之中指的是母鸟在巢中的姿态。应该是“岩石缝里长着一小簇灌木，一只母鸟筑巢其中。就在那里，在激流之中、鸟巢之上，端坐着那只母鸟——极度宁静与安详。”
