Shiva and Parvati: The Divine Couple in Hinduism
1. Shiva and Parvati
Shiva is one of the three principal deities in Hinduism (Trimurti), known as the Destroyer (also the Transformer) of the universe. He is also the archetypal ascetic (yogi), associated with meditation, yoga, and cosmic energy.
Parvati (also called Uma) is Shiva’s consort, the goddess of love, fertility, devotion, and divine strength (Shakti). She is the reincarnation of Shiva’s first wife Sati, who self-immolated after her father insulted Shiva.
Together, they embody the balance of masculine (Shiva, passive consciousness) and feminine (Parvati, active energy) cosmic forces.

2. Key Mythology
- The Marriage of Shiva and Parvati
After Sati’s death, Shiva retreated to Mount Kailash in deep meditation. Parvati, daughter of the mountain king Himavan, fell in love with Shiva and undertook severe austerities (tapas) to win him over . Her devotion eventually melted Shiva’s ascetic resolve, and they married . Their wedding (Kalyanasundara) is a popular theme in Hindu art.
- Ardhanarisvara: The Androgynous Form
A iconic depiction of Shiva and Parvati fused into one body—half male (Shiva) and half female (Parvati). This symbolizes the inseparability of masculine and feminine energies in creation.
- Their Children
They have two sons: Ganesha (the elephant-headed god of wisdom and obstacles) and Kartikeya (the six-headed god of war) .

3. Iconography & Symbolism
- Shiva’s Symbols: Third eye (spiritual wisdom, burns desire to ashes), matted hair (jata) holding the Ganges River, crescent moon, trident (trishul), drum (damaru), and a blue throat (from drinking cosmic poison).
- Parvati’s Symbols: Serene face, red/gold silk sarees, lotus, and gentle but powerful posture.
- Together: Often shown seated on Mount Kailash or the bull Nandi (Shiva’s vehicle), in loving embrace (Uma-Maheshvara form).
