Beauty Is Meaningless(难言的美)

A young man sees a sunset and, unable to understand or to express the emotion thar it rouses in him, concludes that it must be the gateway to a world that lies beyond. It is difficult for any of us in moments of intense aesthetic experience to resist the suggestion that we are catching a glimpse of a light that shines down to us from a differenct realm of existence, different and, because the experience is intensively moving, in some way higher. And, though the gleams blind and dazzle,yet they do convey a hint of beauty and serenity greater than we have known or imagined. Greater than we can describe, for language, which has invented to convey the meanings of this world, cannot readily be fitted to the uses of another.
一个年轻人看到落日，心潮澎湃。那难言的情怀使他认为日落处一定是通向另外一个世界的大门。我们每一个人在受到美感的冲击时都不禁认为我们看到了来自另外一个世界的光芒。一线光芒照射在我们身上。它不同于我们以往的阳光。从某个角度上讲，它更胜一筹。因为它给我们带来的美的享受让我们心动不已。尽管这种光芒让我们眼花撩乱，但它给我们传递了一种气息——我们未曾经历又难以想象的美丽与宁静的气息。这种美丽与宁静是我们的难以言传的。因为人类创造语言是用来表达我们自己世界意义的，还不适用于另外一个世界。
