The First Meeting

In the scene where Nick first meets Daisy and Jordan in the living room, all the gorgeous details are not just scene settings, but metaphors subtly planted by Fitzgerald. This living room scene seems to be a warm moment of reunion between old friends, but in fact, it is filled with alienation and pretense everywhere. Fitzgerald uses those magnificent details like jasmine fragrance, white dresses and champagne glasses to build an exquisite "cage", where the people inside are trapped in the tide of the times, covering their inner emptiness and confusion with glitz. Nick's arrival is like a faint beam of light breaking into this cage, and it also lays the groundwork for Gatsby's subsequent tragedy - in such a world full of pretense, pure love and dreams are doomed to be devoured by glitz.
