  Mauryan Empire was founded around 321 B.C.E. and ended in 185 B.C.E.It was the first pan-Indian empire that covered most of the Indian region. It spanned across central and northern India as well as over parts of modern-day Iran.
  Chandragupta Maurya, the Mauryan Empire’s first leader, started consolidating land as Alexander the Great’s power began to wane. Alexander died in 323 B.C.E.,which left a large power vacuum. And Chandragupta took advantage, gathering an army and overthrowing the Nanda power in Magadha, in present-day eastern India, marking the start of the Mauryan Empire. After crowning himself king, Chandragupta took additional lands through force and by forming alliances.
  Bindusara, Chandragupta’s son, assumed the throne around 300 B.C.E. and ended in 272 B.C.E. He kept empire running smoothly while maintaining its lands. He successfully campaigned in the Deccan and ended his quest near present-day Karnataka, presumably because of the camaraderie shared by the Mauryas with the Cholas, Cheras and Pandyas ruling the extreme southern territories. He was also successful in suppressing uprisings of people in Takshashila and those of the northern mountain kingdoms against his government by commissioning his able son Ashoka in such pursuit.
  Bindusara’s son, Ashoka, was the third leader of the Mauryam Empire. During his reign, he erected large stone pillars  inscribed edicts that he issued. After leading a bloody campaign against Kalinga, Ashoka reevaluated his commitment to expanding the empire and instead turned Buddhism and its tenet of nonviolence. Many of his edicts encouraged people to give up violence and live in peace with each other—two important Buddhist principals.
  After Ashoka’s death, his family continued to reign, but the empire began to break apart. The last of the Mauryas, Brihadratha, was assassinated by his commander in chief—a man named Pushyamrita who went on to found the Shunga Dynasty—in 185 B.C.E.

          The Mauryan Empire: A Definition of Art and Architecture
  While the Mauryan Empire is known for being the first empire to spread across most of India, it also is known for its unprecedented growth of art and architecture. Mauryan art and architecture were created in India between the 4th to 2nd centuries BCE and represented a shift from using wood to stone as a primary material. The architecture can be divided into court art commissioned by Mauryan rulers and popular art commissioned by individuals. Court art consisted of palaces, pillars, and stupas. Popular art consisted of caves, pottery, and sculptures. Mauryan art was at its height under Emperor Ashoka.The Mauryan Dynasty has left its mark in the history of world architecture and art.

I found that since Chandragupta Maurya was born in a family that raised peacocks, people later called the empire Maurya Dynasty. And there is another saying that the word "Maurya" comes from its Sanskrit pronunciation (may ū Ra), similar pronunciation to the name of Chandragupta Maurya's mother,Mura.

Ashoka,the symbol of the Mauryan Empire,he pushed the Mauryan Empire to the peak of prosperity.However,Ashoka looked to Buddhism to atone for the terrible kalinga war  prompt his conversion to Buddhism.Ashoka was able to expand the empire in a relatively peaceful manner.And the Mauryan Empire collapse after the death of Ashoka because future emperors were weak and unable to hold the large Empire together,resulting in it splintering into many smaller empires.
