I don't think the living conditions of black slaves of that time are the most frightening, because what you mentioned is the fact. Fact is clear, and you may ascribe it to be miserable and astonishing, but it is not scrary. What could be considerated as scary is something subtle that is decaying, and something violent you may not have sensed but may come about in the future. In this way, what has taken place could not be the sceariest, because who knows if the future will become better. So the plot of Sethe murdering her own children with which she even felt delighted is the scariest. But I don't think it is proper to call it irony. Although this plot satires the dark age, but it's too melancholy to be called irony. If I am allowed to choose, I may be sympothetic about what Sethe has done. |
