Obama, A Friend ?
On 5 November, 2008, the 44th American president was unveiled. Democratic nominee –Barack Obama, a black, won the White House. Obviously, this ever-first black president, in America’s history, is welcomed not only by US domestic citizens, but also the foreigners, shown in the landslide victory and tearful supporters.
According to the surveys, a flood of people support Obama due to his presidential slogan: we need change. While white people want to have a completely new ruler, blacks want an opportunity to be equal, Obama prevails John Macain, Republic presidential nominee, who is regarded as a typical US president, wearing the same shoes as formers. Of modesty, generosity, wit, and black skin of course, Obama gives the world a new image of US.
As for Chinese, we did and do expecte a decent relationship with US. But as a capitalistic country, being gentle to a communist is more than harder. Considering the not-so-friendly stance of US when in Mr. Bush’s administration, we eagerly look forward to a transform by holding belief on the new president-elect—Obama, largely on his advocating slogan. Things are never so simple to digest however. As for such a “big person” of the time, a much more thorough meditation still can not be enough.
First, if we choose to trust Obama only because of his black skin, to a large extent, we are absolutely irrational. What is universally known is that Chinese and the blacks always maintain a friendly relationship. So, as being black, Obama was believed to give a warm embrace by Chinese. But we are wrong. How much it really matters for him being black? Please don’t forget he is an American at first. Representing the common wealth of America is his foremost duty. Plus, as a president, limited in power, he only performs as the spokesman of his country, not his own.. Moreover, Obama is a democratic. Throughout the interaction with it, the Democratic are more or less hostile toward china. Following the former policy is Obama’s most natural choice. We can find clues in his presidential campaign. The criticism about china’s inhumanity to Tibet and Taiwan is raised by him. Asserting the one-china policy at one hand, then selling the weapons of mass destructions, in the guise of humane assistance, confidentially is their deeds. Therefore, don’t rely on our hope by trusting simply his black skin. “I am an American, who just happened to be a black”, as he said in the campaign
Second, will US, under Obama’s leading, cooperate willingly with china more sincerely and actively? In this moment, reviving the US sluggish economy and pulling armies out of swamp of battles are his top priorities. Considering the deteriorating trade, for a short time, Obama, like previous presidents, will play an active role in the development of china-us bilateral relationship, totally aimed at shedding the financial burden to china, dragged us into the whirlpool of economical recession. By overcoming it, everything returns to its original point—not enemy, neither friend.
After all, just like the spokesman of Chinese government had said, nothing will change only because one another thing or people changed. Holding an objective and sensible attitude at this black president is the choice of wisdom. |
