1. Basic Profile & Unrivaled Global Status

Borobudur (Indonesian: Candi Borobudur) is the world's largest ancient Buddhist temple (stupa) (verified by Guinness World Records), built between 778–850 CE during the reign of the Sailendra Dynasty in Central Java, Indonesia.
Widely hailed as "Indonesia's Pyramid", it stands as the most magnificent monumental relic in the Southern Hemisphere, and is universally recognized as one of the Five Great Wonders of the East, alongside the Great Wall of China, Taj Mahal, Angkor Wat, and the Pyramids of Egypt.
This 9th-century Mahayana Buddhist monument covers a total stone volume of 60,000 m³, stands 34.5 meters tall, with a 123-meter-wide square base.

2. Architectural Structure & Buddhist Cosmology

The entire temple is designed as a three-dimensional Buddhist mandala, perfectly integrating the symbolic forms of stupa, sacred temple mountain, and cosmic mandala. Its structure strictly corresponds to the three realms of Buddhist cosmology:

• Kāmadhātu (The World of Desire): The pyramidal base, representing the realm of human desire.

• Rūpadhātu (The World of Forms): 5 concentric square terraces, decorated with elaborate reliefs and Buddha statues, symbolizing the world of form and spiritual cultivation.

• Arūpadhātu (The Formless World): 3 circular platforms topped by a monumental central stupa, surrounded by 72 perforated stupas each enshrining a Buddha statue, representing the ultimate formless nirvana.

3. The World's Treasure Trove of Stone Carving Art

Borobudur houses one of the most extensive and exquisite collections of Buddhist reliefs in human history, a true encyclopedia of ancient Buddhist art carved in stone:

• It features a total of 2,672 relief panels (1,460 narrative panels and 1,212 decorative panels), covering a total surface area of 2,500 square meters.

• The reliefs vividly depict the life of Buddha, core Buddhist teachings, daily life of 8th-century ancient Java, as well as flora, fauna, architecture, and social customs of the era, serving as an invaluable historical archive for Southeast Asian studies.

• The monument also preserves 504 original Buddha statues, with 72 additional statues seated inside the perforated stupas on the top platforms.

4. History, Rediscovery & UNESCO World Heritage

After flourishing for about 150 years, Borobudur was abandoned and buried under volcanic ash and jungle vegetation around the 10th century, due to volcanic eruptions of Mount Merapi and the shift of Javanese society to Islam.
It was rediscovered in 1814 by Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles, the British ruler of Java at the time, who brought this forgotten wonder back to global attention.
The largest restoration project was completed in 1983 by the Indonesian government and UNESCO, and Borobudur was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1991, for its outstanding universal value to human civilization.

5. Cultural Significance & Living Heritage

For over a millennium, Borobudur has remained a sacred site for Buddhist pilgrimage. Every year during Vesak Day, the most important Buddhist festival, thousands of pilgrims from around the world gather here to hold grand religious ceremonies.
As a masterpiece that blends Indian Gupta art with indigenous Javanese cultural traditions, Borobudur is not only a national symbol of Indonesia, but also a global icon of intercultural dialogue and religious harmony. It proves that ancient civilizations can transcend time and national boundaries, and continue to inspire the world with their wisdom and beauty.
