Part One
The story is told from Klara's perspective. Klara is an artificial friend with extraordinary powers of observation and empathy.
Klara began from the display window of the store and carefully observed the passers-by and children. She was attracted by the outside world, especially having a deep-rooted reverence for the sun. Due to her solar nature, she regarded the sun as a life-giving entity that was almost like God.
Then, she met Josie, a sickly girl. Josie's mother conducted a series of strict tests on Klara, such as asking her to imitate Josie's gait. Klara's performance impressed her mother deeply, and she decided to take her home. As soon as she arrived at Josie's home, Klara became Josie's loyal companion.
She also got to know Josie's childhood friend Rick. There is an obvious difference between them: Josie has been "upgraded" (genetically enhanced), while Rick hasn't. This genetic difference lays the foundation for the class differences among children in society. Klara witnessed the growing distance between Josie and Rick as they sailed on different paths in life.
As Klara continued to observe and interact, she began to notice the hidden tensions within the family and her mother's ulterior motives. She had no idea at all that her role might soon be more than just a friend. In the worst-case scenario, she might be used to "replace" Josie. Through these initial experiences, Klara began to understand the complex and mysterious human emotions, interpersonal relationships, and the social structure that governed the world she entered.
