In the preface and introduction of The Spirit of the Chinese People, Gu Hongming passionately argues that understanding the real Chinese character is crucial, especially as Westerners often misunderstand China. He believes China’s true strength lies in its spiritual and moral civilization, which is distinct from the material - centered Western civilization. Gu Hongming asserts that the Chinese people possess an inborn sense of kindness, profound wisdom, and a child - like simplicity, making their spirit unique.

Gu’s work offers a fresh perspective. By highlighting China’s cultural and moral heritage, he challenges the Western - centric view of the time. His writing is both patriotic and thought - provoking, attempting to defend and promote Chinese culture. However, his ideas also show limitations. His glorification of traditional Chinese values sometimes overlooks the need for social change and modernization, and his contrast between Eastern and Western cultures can be overly simplistic.

After reading, I realized the importance of cultural self - awareness. Gu Hongming’s defense of Chinese culture reminds us to cherish our heritage while also being open to learning from others. It also made me understand that cultural misunderstandings can be bridged through sincere communication and a deeper exploration of different cultures.
