In Part 2, Klara continues to adapt to her new life with Josie, who is struggling with her health. Josie’s condition fluctuates, and her mother remains deeply concerned about her well-being. Klara’s role as Josie’s AF evolves as she learns more about Josie’s personality, her relationship with Rick, and the challenges Josie faces in her social interactions. Klara becomes increasingly aware of the emotional complexities of human relationships, particularly how loneliness drives people to behave in ways that can be hurtful or confusing. Josie’s health takes a turn for the worse, and her mother decides to take Klara and Josie to Morgan’s Falls, a place Josie loves. However, Josie’s illness prevents her from joining the trip, and Klara goes with Josie’s mother instead. Back home, Josie becomes more withdrawn, and her interactions with Rick become strained. Therefore, Klara grows increasingly determined to find a way to help her. The writing style in Part 2 is introspective and contemplative, with a focus on Klara’s observations and reflections as she navigates her new environment. The prose is lyrical and poetic, yet precise, capturing the emotional nuances of human relationships through Klara’s unique perspective as an AF. For example, Klara finds that Josie becomes different or even more impolite to her when she is with others in fear of not fitting with them. This example also reveals the theme of this part. The central themes revolve around loneliness, belonging, and the human desire for connection. Josie’s struggle with her health and her interactions with Rick highlight the tension between societal expectations and individual identity. She wants to be healthy and active like others but she can't. Rick wishes she would be more indepedent while her illness hindered her.
I think this reflects the sense of belonging and loneliness of human beings, especially how loneliness drives people to seek acceptance or retreat into isolation. Sometimes we lack the courage to be unconventional. Josie's health problems not only affected her physical condition, but also profoundly influenced her psychological state and self-identity. In life, perhaps we will also encounter many problems that affect us. We can learn from Klara, not blindly conforming to social norms, but rather demonstrating mental resilience in adverse circumstances.
