"Hard Times" is a long work of fiction by English writer Dickens, published in 1854.
The novel focuses on the difficult lives of Glynn and Ponder Bay.
The protagonist, Glynn, is a retired hardware merchant and a member of Parliament who is proud of his advocacy of an education that suppresses human nature. The wealthy businessman, Poundbay, on the other hand, presents himself as a self-made successor. They shared common values - that is, utilitarianism as a principle of life. Under this upbringing, the daughter is forced to marry a capitalist named Poundbay, who is thirty years older than her, and is mentally tortured after the marriage. The son gambled so much that he became a thief and fled abroad.
Through his depiction of the characters of Glynn and Poundbeck and their encounters, Dickens reflects the social landscape of nineteenth-century England and exposes and criticizes the bourgeoisie in a more profound way.
