The Simpsons is a very popular series of TV comedy in the United States. This movie is a adaptation of the early series in 2007 and gained a huge box office in both USA and the world. Even if Homer Simpson himself calls everyone a “giant sucker” for paying good money to watch something they can get free at home, “The Simpsons” is a necessity for the wide screen.
One of the spotlights in this movie is that the director imitates and adapts several scenes from some classics and melts these parts into his own story harmoniously. If you are a huge movie fan, there will be a lot of surprise during your appreciation. At the drowning part of the band, it reminds us of the sinking of the great ship Titanic; while when Lisa is giving the presentation concerning Water pollution, it reminds us of the movie An Inconvenient Truth where Gale gave his speech on global warming by using the same equipment. Needless to mention, there are also a lot of famous people appeared in the movie, Schwarzenegger as the president, Tom Hanks as the ambassador of the Spring Field. This, at the time, gives more difficulties to the audience, who are not familiar with the American culture; it will give you more fun if you can really understand it.
Al Jean described the film's message as being "a man should listen to his wife". In addition, the film parodies two major contemporary issues, religion and environmentalism. The theme of environmentalism is present in Homer's polluting of Lake Springfield, Green Day's cameo, and Lisa and Colin's romance. The environment plays a key role in the movie, as Homer’s devotion to his new pet pig leads to a pollution catastrophe at Lake Springfield. President Arnold Schwarzenegger, under the advice of ruthless Environmental Protection Agency chief Russ Cargill, takes drastic action, sealing the entire town under a giant dome. As one of the most developed nations in the world, the USA plays a vital important role in economic development as well as in the environmental pollution. So like many disaster movies, the director might want to tell us the inconvenient truth we are facing by overstating the real situation. And according to Reviewer Ed Gonzalez’s view the plot was a satire of the government's reaction to the effects of Hurricane Katrina on New Orleans.
Religion is focused on in Grandpa's momentary possession, and Marge believing what he said to be a message from God. Comparing with the pilgrims’ period, Christianity has changed a lot. Maybe the religion is not as pure as it should be. Especially among teenagers, the believing of God is fading away. That’s why in the movie, when grandpa predicts the future, almost everybody worried that he is sick or even out of his mind, and locks him in a car. They do not realize the danger until the real disaster comes, sounding like the Noah’s story happens again. Except this there are still some other Bible-like scenes. The animators inserted an apple tree behind Lisa and Colin during their initial meeting, a reference to the biblical story of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden. Trees were implemented in every important or emotional scene throughout the film, which, I think, symbolize the pure nature of human-beings.
When it comes to The Simpsons, longevity is an asset few can ignore. 18 years old, the TV series has carved itself into pop culture. So it’s possible that the less you wanted or cared about a Simpsons movie, the more you’ll enjoy The Simpsons Movie. |
