By asking myself who could be called a global citizen, I found that I was confusing myself. A citizen is a person belonging to a particular nation by birth or by being naturalized. So how can it be global at the same time? Does that mean world peace? Or no more visas? Or having lunch in Manhattan and sleeping in a peaceful Chinese mountain village? Those were things I could imagine. But with the process of digging out more illustrations, I realized it’s not contradictious.
Thousands of years ago , when being asked where you were from, the famous Greek philosopher Diogenes said,” I am a world citizen.” That meant he did not belong to any certain group or area, and always cared about the whole world. Last year, when attending an international movie award, the famous Hollywood movie star, Brad Pitter said:’ I feel more like a global citizen and I am really honored to sit with so many multi-cultural people.’ He is the best example of a modern global citizen who has the ability and opportunity to understand and relate to people from many different parts of the world. We all have two identities, one of the world, one of the place where we were born.
This summer, I worked in a language training agency with a group of foreign teaching staff. During that period, we afforded the same responsibility for teaching and worked as a team. Also, we exchanged and shared ideas reflecting our native culture and feature. We threw western parties with Chinese food supplied, sang English songs with Chinese folk dance accompanied, and discussed the difference between our education systems. Although we believe in different religions, we keep different traditions and customs and we even regard different places as the center of the world-- we never need to give them up.
In English there is a saying that goes ‘think globally, act locally’.Only when a man can realize his two identities and integrate them harmoniously, does he get the chance to be a global citizen.
More than 2000 years ago, our first emperor QinShihuang established the nation by absorbing advantages from the neighboring countries. Almost 400 years ago, the American continent melted her first immigrants and now a great nation has been presented before our eyes. Nearly 20 years ago, we opened our door to the whole world and had kept interacting with her since then.
Ladies and gentlemen, this 21st century is the time of globalization and the global era has been ushered from our home. |
