some thinking about the reason of indifference

Lin Yutang offers a very insightful interpretation of Chinese people's indifference: When these rights are not protected, however, our instinct of self-preservation tells us that indifference is our best constitutional guarantee of personal liberty. In other words, indifference is not a high moral virtue but a social attitude rendered necessary by the absence of legal protection. It is a form of self-protection, developed in the same way that a tortoise develops its shell.

He hits the nail on the head and directly points out the fundamental cause of Chinese people's indifference: the lack of legal protection. I believe human nature is inherently good, and there must be more good people than bad in the world. But why are we so hostile toward strangers? Because we are afraid. Afraid of what? Everyone harbors the answer deep in their heart.

This kind of fear isn’t some abstract feeling; it’s rooted in real-life lessons we’ve all seen or heard. A person who stops to help a fallen elder might end up being framed; someone who speaks up against unfair treatment could face unnecessary trouble. So we gradually learn to look away, to mind our own business, not because we’re cold-hearted, but because we don’t want to pay a heavy price for doing the right thing. Young people might still feel the urge to step forward at first, but as they grow older and encounter more setbacks, that initial enthusiasm fades away. We wrap ourselves in that tortoise shell of indifference, not to hurt others, but to shield ourselves from potential harm. It’s a sad reality, but it’s the way many of us have learned to survive. What’s even more frustrating is that this cycle is hard to break—when everyone chooses to stay silent, the world becomes a little colder, and it takes more courage than ever to be the one who dares to care.
