Coffee and Tea
Of all beverages, I’m fond of tea and coffee. As we know, China is the homeland of tea and people throughout China drink tea daily. Tea was spread to Japan in the 6th century, but it was not introduced to Europe and America till the 17th and 18th centuries. Tea is consumed by a large number of the world and at present more than forty countries grow tea.
If there is any other beverage which can have an effect on lives of people as tea does, it must be coffee.
We always treat coffee as the produce by West, however, in fact, it’s not ture. Coffee has a long history dating back to at least 9th century. Originally discovered in Ethiopia, coffee beans were brought into the Middle East by Arab traders, spreading to Egypt and North Africa by the 15th century. And then the British East India Trading Company were popularizing the beverage in England. Finally, coffee spread across Europe and even reacher America.
From this, we can find that, in some sense, coffee and tea are more than just drinks. From their inceptions, they have been a catalyst for socical interaction across culture and eras and have been tied closely with cultural trend.
when I drank a cup of tea, I would feel a white cloud floating in the sky , a red leaf in the water and a beauty smiling in the green trees. On the contrary, When I tasted a cup of coffee , I would see a grand castle in the shine of afterglow, a gentleman working in a luxurious office where the soft-light combines the color of liquid. Aroma of tea poured into the calligraphy of WangXizhi and pictures of SuShi. Fragrance of coffee was in the air as Beat poets like Kerouac and Ginsberg with their alienation.
In most people’s memories, other than in my memory, coffee and tea stand for different culture. So some people take much attention to their difference. It’s believed that caffein does harm to health but tea benefits to us; coffee belongs to youth and tea belongs to the elder.
To tell the ture, it’s not right. Both coffee and tea belong to world. Coffee culture, by fashion and modernlife, has become popular in China. There are no less coffeehouses than teahouses in a city. At the same time, western examples are afternoon tea and tea party. Besides, American Tea Culture Association had been established and many foreign people took part in it. That is say, tea clutre and coffee culture have been accepted by all over the world and combine together gradually.
Sometimes we love over-emphasizing our little differences, our hatreds. If humanity is to be saved, we must focus on our affinities, the point of contact with all other human beings; by all means we must avoid accentuating our differences.
So, when I enjoy coffee or tea, I feel that I’m connected to countless numbers of people spanning many different cultures and going on changing in this era of technology and globalization. Maybe, someday, someone can produce a beverage containing tea and coffee. I’m looking forward to it.
