Reading at the word “metonymy”, I am a little bit confused: What’s this? I have never read it before.
According to the first paragraph, two examples “Inflation robbed me of my savings” and “The ham sandwich is waiting for his check.” are not using personification, instead they are using one entity to refer to another that is related to it. From my point of view, it is kind of like “Jiedai” in Chinese. For example, n the case “Mrs. Grundy frowns on blue jeans. (= the wearing of blue jeans)”, it reminds me of Xianglin Sao, in Zhu Fu, by Lu Xun. It describes she as Yuangui(compasses). And in another case I remember that “上面坐着两个老爷,东边的一个是马褂,西边的一个是西装”.
Especially when I read the words “THE PART FOR THE WHOLE ”, I am sure that this kind of metaphor has something related to Jiedai.
