Reading Task: Part 2 Chapter 12 Logical Connectives
Summary of the Content: This chapter talks about logical connectives which is final requirement of English prose: the need for logical connections between ideas. Last four chapters are preparations for this topic, ensuring clear and rational connections between the elements of a sentence or between successive sentences. Then is introduces some simple but useful words and phrases like, and, but, if and so on. Followed by several examples of logical connectives. A large number of types of logical connectives are mentioned, including addition or amplification, contrast or opposition, cause or effect, similarity and so on, which is quite detailed and complete. This chapter talks about “with”, “while” and wrong logical connectives.
Reflection: After learning different aspects of a single, fundamental requirement of English prose. We need to learn for logical connections. Logical coherence plays an important role in an article. Like Barzun and Graff having said, “to be heard and heeded you must do more than lay your ideas side by side” Adverbs can have more functions than I always think. “nevertheless” can replace a whole long phrase in the sentence “Nevertheless he decides to go,” showing economy. |
