" A Farewell to Arms " is Hemingway 's semi-autobiographical novel written in 1929, which is his third novel. In this novel, we can see many of Hemingway 's own shadows from the protagonist Henry. Hemingway 's request to volunteer for World War I was rejected because of his poor eyesight. After that, he became the driver of the Red Cross ambulance like the protagonist Henry. Hemingway was sent to the hospital when he was wounded on the battlefield in 1918. At the age of 19, he fell in love with Agnes, a nurse who cared for him at the time and was seven years older than him, echoing the character of Catherine in the novel. However, unlike the novel, Agnes coldly rejects Hemingway 's love. |
