Sissy is a special female figure in the novel Hard Times. Although Dickens gives little description of her, she runs through the novel and exuded bright brilliance. Although the novel is always full of the bad atmosphere brought by the environment, Sissy is not eroded and polluted. On the contrary, she radiates kindness at all times. Trapped in dilemmas, but daring to overcome the hardships, Sissy always maintains her good nature and original intention. Not only that, she also influences the people around her. She brings her kindness and mercy to the people around her, which is actually the most valuable point of her personality. Her words and deeds affect Mr. Gradgrind, let him realize the limitations of his educational mode and the lack of education for children, and further make Mr. Gradgrind to correct. Indeed, Sissy ends up in a good place at the end of the novel, which has a lot to do with her insistence to the essence of benevolence. As a woman, Sissy lives tenaciously like a weed, but also like a blazing sun, always selflessly illuminating others. As a positive character, Dickens endows her with a wide range of concerns and ideals, and shows the brilliance of human benevolent in this small figure. |
