The Ashokan Pillar is one of the oldest and most revered monuments at Lumbini, Nepal.
1.History of The Ashokan Pillar
They were built or at least inscribed by the Emperor Ashoka during his reign from 268 to 232 BC throughout the Indian subcontinent.The most famous of the columns is the one that was erected at Sarnath.The Sarnath pillar is a column surmounted by a capital, which consists of a canopy representing an inverted bell-shaped lotus flower, a short cylindrical abacus where alternate four 24-spoked Dharma wheels with four animals (an elephant, a bull, a horse, a lion in this order), a four lions facing the four cardinal directions.

2.The Ashokan Pillar Today
The Ashokan Pillar now stands outside the Maya Devi Temple, which is a UNESCO world heritage site. Combined with the temple, the Pillar is a hugely popular tourist attraction for Buddhists and non-Buddhists alike. It is also a key destination for many Buddhist pilgrimages. The area itself is historically and spiritually fascinating, with the holy site of Lumbini being bordered by a large monastic zone in which strictly only monasteries are allowed to be built.

阿育王石柱现在矗立在雅德维神庙外。这座神庙是联合国教科文组织世界遗产。阿育王石柱与寺庙相结合，如今十分受佛教徒和非佛教徒欢迎的旅游景点，也是许多佛教朝圣的主要目的地。蓝毗尼圣地历史悠久醇厚，精神文化深厚丰富，与一个很大的修道院区接壤。严格意义上来说，该地区只允许建造修道院。

The Ashoka Pillar can be visited in the museum. An inverted lotus flower forms a platform for this pillar and at the top are four lions sitting back to back facing the four directions. Other illustrations on the pillar include an elephant, a galloping horse, a bull, and a lion, separated by intervening spooked chariot-wheels – the Dharma Chakra with 24 spokes.The four lions on the Capital Pillar symbolise Ashoka's rule over the four directions, the wheels are the symbols of his enlightened rule and the four animals (elephant, bull, horse, lion) symbolise four adjoining territories of India.

This is one of the nineteen surviving columns erected or at least inscribed with edicts by the Emperor Ashoka during his reign in the 3rd century BCE. These columns are also referred to as the "Pillars of Ashoka" and they are dispersed throughout the northern Indian subcontinent.

Many are preserved in a fragmentary state, averaging between forty and fifty feet in height, and weighing up to fifty tons each, the pillars were dragged, sometimes hundreds of miles, to where they were erected.
