瓦拉纳西——印度人心中的朝圣地和死亡地
瓦拉纳西犹如耶路撒冷，是印度教徒的心中圣地，他们人生的四大乐趣---"住瓦拉纳西、结交圣人、饮恒河水、敬湿婆神"有3个都要在此实现。
信奉印度教的人们相信湿婆常在这里的恒河边上巡视，凡在这里死亡并火化的，均可免受轮回之苦，直接升入天堂，所以每天都有成千上万的教徒从四面八方赶来。恒河里有祈祷的教徒，也有洗浴的水牛、祭祀的香火，河畔有隆重的焚尸场，没有被烧成灰的尸体被抛入河中，各种污物在河水中时隐时现。但这并不影响恒河在印度教徒心目中的地位，望着焚烧尸体的袅袅青烟，他们愈加虔诚，希望能洗净宿世的罪业，让自己的灵魂平安进入轮回。
印度教徒相信恒河能够自我清洁，认为世界上只有恒河水不会滋生出传染病菌，所以他们放心地饮用，并且用容器把水带回家里，以便在一些隆重日子喷洒在自己身上。他们整个注意力都集中到了来世，忽略了现世的周围环境。
