Penguins, mostly black and white marine flightless birds, are the protagonists of the animated cartoon Surf’s Up. The story itself has nothing new. Penguins are making documentaries about their brothers who surf, which is no more than the classic documentary about human surfers—Endless Summer. Here I mean is that the characters can be any other animals, kitty, puppy, or even cute animated giraffes. And the story would tell the same.
Surfer penguin Cody Maverick traveling from his home in Antarctica to compete in the Big Z surfing contest met the funniest chicken Joe and Tank Evans. The first one became his best friend and personal assistance while the latter, his biggest opponent. Before he could take to the waves, Cody got life lessons from his all-time hero, Big Z , who's hanging out in Obscuria. He also gets friendly with gorgeous lifeguard Lani and learnt important truths about fun being more important than winning.
Like many other encouraging movies, this one also has its own highlight. The theme is about dream and its fulfillment. A young penguin M, kind of from a remote place—the Antarctica, was a talented surfer. But just like many poor children living in suburban areas did not have fair chance to be involved into the best academy, M himself had never thought of taking part in the greatest surfing contest in the penguins’ world. With the courage from a chicken and some coincidence, he finally got aboard. Before the game, he was only a green hand. While fortunately, he met the former world champion Z who had some secret anecdote. And that’s what made Z retire from surfing and live alone on an island. the ending is a little bit conventional, due to Z’s instruction, M won the game and they live and surf together.
Another symbol in the clip is the surfing board. To make an ideal board, it does not only require a piece of great chunk, but also patience, carefulness, and our enthusiasm. This, I believe, is also the life philosophy that the director wanted to tell us through those plump birds’ clumsy actions.
