The Merits of Computer Games

Computer games present a world—a much simpler world than our own, where success is very clearly defined and easily attained. Through practice, a player can control the world for a while as he pleases. He can escape from the anxieties of the real world and hide into a place where his own actions always count, where he can be a hero and can fulfill his goal and gain satisfaction. When the game is over, he is neither lost nor beaten.
Most computer games call for some delicate and intriguing hand-and-eye coordination. Some hospitals are now using them in rehabilitation programs for brain- damaged patients.
Computer games are not restricted to mere “click” games, however. Strategy games are becoming more and more popular, and among these are the so-called “fantasy role-playing” adventures. These games allow players to construct a whole personality, choosing strengths and weakness from a list of possible character traits.
The computer game mirrors a balance between reality and our own wishes. It has become an outlet for emotion. Whenever we are happy or in frustration, we can get into the world of computer games. But we should know that everything has two sides. The computer game would also do harm to us if we become its prisoners.

When we get used to fulfilling our dreams in games, we find ourselves unable to face the imperfect world in which it is always so difficult to accomplish our ambitions.

Difficulties and setbacks are one natural and necessary part of our life. Only if we get to know this, can we go through vicissiitudes with peace of mind.
