Tackling The Global Housing Crisis: Is The Future Modular?

Countries all over the world are facing a housing crisis, with a massive shortage of homes for expanding populations. About 1.6 billion people live in substandard housing and 100 million are homeless, according to United Nations’ statistics.

While traditional construction methods struggle to provide solutions to the global housing crisis, Estonian design and engineering firm Kodasema believes that the answer, in part, could lie in modular homes.

Founded in 2014, the company creates modular living and housing solutions known as KODA houses. Built off-site and transported to the location, they can be set up in a day, and can also be used as cafés, studios, community spaces and business hubs.

Made from sustainable timber, they are energy efficient, while the flexibility of their design allows them to be moved, making them a quick and sustainable solution for emergency accommodation. This form of construction is around 15% to 20% less expensive than traditional methods.

The simple yet effective design of the KODA could help alleviate the pressures of the housing crisis by providing cost-effective options for housing people on waiting lists for affordable accommodation, or temporary rental apartments for students and young professionals.
