Behaving with Believing
Every one believes some beliefs, and everyone's behaviour is influenced by his beliefs. Voltaire had a saying putting as "If we believe absurdities we shall commit atrocities." which manifests that we always behave in accordance with our beliefs. But where are our beliefs from? How can they produce the effect?Our beliefs stem from our social statues. It is believed that no matter how democratic a society is, grade differentials always exist. Even in today's society, which is blessed with almost full-fledged legal system, there are also some specific ranks in all walks of life. People in one situation have different ideas, let alone people from different classes.
Then in the feudal society in the west or east, which was characterized by hierarchy, different beliefs were more evident and inevitable. In ancient times, in western countries, gladiatorial fightings and duelings, which were the entertainment for their owners were common occurrences. The belief that slaves were aristocracy's belongings was deeply rooted into nobles' mind. Slave owners could ravage, sell and even kill their slaves arbitrarily and willfully. Therefore, aristocrats' devilries derived from their belief that they were the cuts above the others. While digging deeper, their beliefs originated from their born lordship. On the other hand, in eastern countries, typical of China, whose feudalism lasted for several thousand years, the thinking that males were superior to females was deeply rooted. Under the effect of the ideology, men and women were in the unequal circumstances where the male always held the leading position while female was in the subordinate position. The most disgusting custom was feet-binding, whose evil purpose was to keep women in confinement in disguised form to pursue so-called chaste. On the contrary, men could marry many concubines besides his wife, especially the emperor. Thus, men's cruelty rose in the belief that men and women, in essence, had different rights. While thinking further, their belief was from the their sexual distinction in the patriarchy.
The wheel of history turned, we stepped into the modern period. In the modern time, in western countries, on account of the development of capitalism, westerners colonized other areas and criminal slave trade prevailed the world. Whites invaded into Africa, and Blacks were transported across the oceans to America. Then, blacks were segregated and struggled in the society. Apartheid and segregation in the US embodied exactly the discrimination and superiority complex of whites, which lied in the facts that Europeans took the lead in finishing the industrial revolution and turned into well-off capitalists. At another level, in China of 1960s, people said the same words and did the same thing They were likely to be attacked by the Red Guard when they had some opinions inconformity with the socialist slogans inattentively. The whole country was mired into the chaotic situation. The Red Guard's extreme violence was rooted from the idolization of Chairman Mao. And the idea was because workers and peasants are in the orthodox statue in the then society.
In the contemporary era, a lot of notions which were in vogue at that time areridiculous. The progress indicates that we reflect upon ourselves constantly. Even today, however, some people still hold absurdity as beliefs, such as materialism and hedonism. Especially in today's society, people seem to be more greedy for money and bend to power, which will be terribly detrimental to the development of society. You may abuse the power if you believe that you just follow the social habit of taking advantage of the government post; or you may slide into common mediocre if you believe that the span of life must be dolce vita.
In conclusion, beliefs are the principles of behaving, we must always examine ourselves, to hold meaningful beliefs and to do significant things.
