GRE issue
Competition for high grades seriously limits the quality of learning at all levels of education.
It is quite a common phenomenon for students nowadays to compete for high grades at school. However, the grades that a student get from is just a result of his or her efforts given when he or she was trying to master the ability, not the most important criteria to evaluate the competence of students. As a result, if the students focus on the grades but not the actual ability when learning, the quality of learning will be seriously limited.
Most people believe that competition for high grades would help a student to learn more.Countries such as China, Japan use standardized test to evaluate their students. To get into a good university, Asian students have to do very well in the test. However, The competitions for grades push them hard, and they would have to memorize tons of material so that they can score in the exam. Some students feel imperative and urged to study under the high pressure of their parents and teachers. For exampe, in International math and physics contest, Asians are the familiar faces to win prizes. What is more, competition for high grades may arouse extremely mental and psychological stress for students, which will seriously undermine the interest and ability of studying. In this way, the quality of education can be greatly weakened.
In addition, high grades do not mean that he learns more.It just means that he has a good memory. The true measure of learning quality lies in the extent you can apply to the real world. The weakness of Asian students is that they are trained to follow books' solution,so they are only good at solving exam problems. They are notskilled in thinkig from various aspect and thus coming up with provoking solutions to solve various problems.
Last but not the least, learning is not just limited in school;it is an ongoing progress. The competition for grades makes learning painful. Many of us will recall the day when we burned mid night oil to face exams. It is a bitter experience, and we do not want to face it again. Gaining knowledge might be enjoyable, but our school experiences teach us that studying is equal to exams on the purpose of getting good scores. As a result, we would not want to pick up books when we are adults for it reminds us the painful old days. Competition for high grades actually discouragges learning more than encouraging it.
To conclude, competition for high grades is not the right and effective way to achieve a successful education. On the contrary, it seriously limits the quality of education.
