Since China has been developing rapidly in all-round aspects of economy, polity and culture, people’s living standard has been raising up as well as their salaries. However, to teachers, some people point out, their salaries should be based on their students’ academic performance. That seems quite unreasonable.
Han Yu, a Chinese famous scholar in Tang Dynasty, said, “A teacher，is the man who could propagate the doctrine，impart professional knowledge，and resolve doubts.” In fact, the teachers not only pass on all the knowledge they possess, but the manners about how to be a man to their students as much as they could. It’s far beyond their professional morality but their respectable personality. What their students perform, whether they have done well or not, should not be the responsibility teacher must accept, because even Saint Confucius, could not have all his three thousand students being great men. Teachers are one the most unselfish groups in the world, so the salaries for them are relatively less compared with what the students have learned from them, let alone being cut down result from some students’ bad academic performance.
As is known to all, “the master teaches the trade, but apprentice's skill is self-made.” No matter how capable the teacher is, such as Confucius we havementioned, if the student doesn’t want to learn or work hard, it’s as a matter of certain that he will achieve little in academic studies. So it is actually unfair to deal out teacher’s salaries according to this principle. What’s worse, there are always some of the students having biases against their teachers. Sometimes they would rather show their hatred at the cost of their own studies, for instance, refusing to learn or studying badly on purpose, so as to punish their teachers and cut their salaries down. How should teachers get salaries in this personal and unreasonable demand in this case?
Education should not be associated with money, although the realism has been flooding the world. Students’ performance in academic study is the interaction made by the school, their teachers, parents, and most important of all, themselves. Teachers play important roles as leaders to the world of knowledge in education. Salaries for them should not be the reaction to the students’ academic performance.
