Formal education tends to restrain our minds and spirits rather than set them free.I’m always amazed when I hear people saying that formal education tends to restrain our minds and spirits rather than set them free. It seems for some people that the students who study under such educational pattern are just trained to memorize things in order to deal with all kinds of examinations so that their imagination and the air of freedom are overwhelmed by this boring work.
It should be admitted that formal education means a lot of memorizing and exercise to do, but it is this annoying work that provides students with a large amount of knowledge and numerous research methods which will broaden students’ interests and vision to edify their thinking. Even something seems meaningless to memorize, like history, could help people to make the right decision as they got the precious experience from the person who had already been through the same situation many years before.
There is no doubt that the formal education offers students a world filled with complete and systematical knowledge so that itwill help them know more about the world, have the foundation to make a further study and have the inspiration to make their own theories. What formal education to the mind is what bricks to a mansion. And the mind and spirit of a person will never simply decided by how he was educated.
There are other factors like family, friends and economical condition that matter behind individuality. A person who has conservative parents may not be as active as the one who was brought up by the parents that are always keeping up with the trend of young people. And the students from poor economical areas surely will never have the pleasant and complementary study environment as the people from the developed areas do. If formal education restrain people’s mind and spirits, then why the personality of two persons who graduate from the same university differ? One is successful and the other is even struggling for the primary requirements.
Though formal education has its limitations, it never restrains our minds. It is humans and human surroundings that control one’s mind and operate all the activities. Education is just a way to teach you how to operate your mind in proper directions. Instead of blaming the education system, we students should find the problems of ourselves about how to set our minds and spirits free.
