Freezing weather leaves over 100,000 homes out of power
Beijing, Friday 8 January 2010 (Xinhua)— At least 100,000 homes in the city of Shanwu have been knocked out of power as a result of the severe freezing weather which invaded the southeast of China five days ago.

It has snowed on and off for five days in Shanwu and everything outdoors has been covered with a thick layer of ice. Friday the temperatures drops to -15℃, reaching the lowest point of this region in the past 50 years.

The heavy snow has done great harm to electricity supply in this city. Most cable lines have been overburdened with heavy ice, some of which even broke down. Several wire columns have already fallen down. These gave rise to the large scaled power outages in the city, which inconvenient the residents’ lives to a large extent.

“We will try our best to repair the power facilities and recover the electricity supply as soon as possible”, said an official with the Ministry of Electric Power Thursday.

Though the difficulties are unprecedented, the recovery work is still on the way.

As power supply has been cut off, the demand for coal has soared. A lot of people lined before coal shops, and two shops have already sold out their stocks.

We have delivered a ton of coal to the extreme weather-hit region and it is scheduled to reach the destination on Saturday morning, said Liu Yu, director of the disaster relief department with the ministry.

The weather forecast indicates that in the following seven days the temperature will still below -5℃ with the continuous falling of snow, and that it will gradually rise after next Saturday.
