The Second Report from Bible Study Group
I'm sorry for posting this report so late, as the exam period has almost overwhelmed other activities. Here I want to say : "Happy new year and enjoy your holiday." Besides, I hope our group members have find it interesting and will continue studing Bible in the coming new year or choose a new group to learn what interests them.During the second phase, we went on the stories in the Old Testament. The order was in accordance with the course of events in the Bible. The first story Adam and Eve from Tian Yixuan. She presented the definition and influence of the original sin. In addition, she analysed the image of serpent in the Bible from different perspectives. The second story from Wang Ting, The Tower of Babal, in which the God made the languages of people different so that they could not be able to build the tower which would reach the heaven. The third story Joseph Interpreted Dreams by Li Xiaoxia. It is about that Pharaoh had a dream and was troubled about it, but nobody can interpreted the dream. The chief butler recalled Joseph who was still in the prision. Joseph interpreted Pharaoh's dream which came true in the later years, and he became the most powerful man in Egypt only after the king. More information about Joseph was given and the reasons why people feel important about their dreams. These stories all come from the Genesis.
The fourth story Achan's Sin from Joshua, told by Li Hongqin. The victory at Ai is the full name, in the story Achan disobeyed the order of God. The Israelites defeated in the war, and then God told Joshua that someone had kept the property of enemy. At last, Achan was found out and stoned to death. The fifth one, Job's Ordeal in the Book of Job, told by Liu Jie. Job is described as a blessed man who lives righteously. Satan challenges Job's integrity by proposing to God who later removes Job's protection, allowing Satan to take his wealth, his children, and his physical health in order to tempt Job to curse God. Despite his difficult circumstances, he does not curse God, but rather curses the day of his birth. After God believed the faith of Job, he doubled Job's bless. Liu Jie also mentioned about the image of Satan. The sixth, Zhu Xiuqin told the story of Jonah. First, she presented the different character of God in the story. He is mercy, kind, and tolerative. Second, God is unfair to Egyptian. Third, God's words are not matched by deeds.
Miss Geng suggested us think deeper about the story, and provoke our viewpoint on the images in literature works as well as in present life. We can interpret their roles, and ask questions like, why does God perish, punish, kill, or forgive the people, has God really creates people equally and treats them without prejudice? If we do as so, more interesting thoughts we shall find, and more we can understand the Bible.
